About Yass
Historically Yass, an important rural service centre on the Yass River, a tributary of the Murrumbidgee, was a town in the heart of one of the country’s prime sheep growing areas. It was noted for its high quality wool and merino studs. Over the past thirty years has become increasingly known for its vineyards and its classy produce. By passed in 1994 it is no longer a stop on the Hume Highway but rather a quiet town with a broad main street, a number of attractive parks, a collection of handsome historic buildings and a relaxed ambience. Getting there
Traveling south of Ulladulla down the Princes Highway we turned right just out of Batemans Bay to travel up the famous Clyde Mountain road, one which we have driven many times, but the 1st time towing our Bailey Caravan. It was a no brainer, just taking our time with the Land Cruiser proving it’s mighty strength as we drove over the great dividing range for yet another time on this trip.
Stopping off at the Albion Cafe in Braidwood (maplink) for a coffee was a great choice. The decor of this place is very cool with lots of local produce also for sale.
The route we took is one we learnt when the kids were little, which by-passes Canberra, turning right (instead of left) at Bungendore and taking what is locally called the “Gunderoo Road” ending up at Murrumbateman. It’s then a short trip to our destination in Yass (route map).
Accommodation
It was good old WikiCamps where we found our overnight stay in Yass at the Yass Showgrounds. This was a great spot to stay for the night at only $20 with power & water. The place had received a lot of rain so it was pretty hard to find a flat spot to park which wasn’t muddy, but we still managed.
Anything to do here?
We basically pulled up with the caravan and chilled, chatting with the neighbours and that was that. Maybe we can check-out Yass next time.
