About Shepparton
Shepparton is the major rural service centre in the Goulburn Valley and the headquarters of the Goulburn Valley Irrigation System. The surrounding area produces fruit, vegetables, cereals and milk products. Once known for its fruit canneries, today it is a diverse regional centre with an impressive art gallery, a genuinely multicultural community which welcomes new residents, a wide range of excellent restaurants and a superb local park – the Victoria Park lake precinct. Getting there
Holbrook to Shepparton was another straight forward drive, travelling down the Hume Highway, turning off at Benalla then straight through to Shepparton. It was another thoroughly drenching drive (route map). The primary reason for selecting Shepparton was to catch up with friends.
Accommodation
We selected Victoria Lake Holiday Park for a change, but did not get to enjoy it at all. The park is situated on Victoria Lake (next to the Goulburn River), is known for it’s nature trails and is also close to the city centre.
What did we do here?
Besides avoiding the torrential rain and worrying whether we would get flooded out, we caught up with friends Garry & Shirley in the local Lifestyle Village as well as Gary & Lorraine at their home. It’s always great to catch up with friends who you would not normally see back in Melbourne.
Getting Home
Shepparton was our last stop-over. Leaving early on the Friday morning it was a really nervous drive south as we had heard that the Goulburn River floods had cut the Hume Highway at Seymour. We took the chance that we could make it though and along the way we encountered so many cars that had damaged tyres & wheels by driving over the many large pot-holes caused by the rain.
We managed to get through to arrive safely back at our home in Melbourne. If we had left just 1 day later we would never have gotten through AND the caravan park in Shepparton was totally flooded that next day as well – so we were a couple of very lucky travellers.
